Credit Counselors - What They Can Do for You

Credit counselors are professionals who help and guide consumers manage their finances and debt. They educate consumers on how to plan their budget and how to manage their debt wisely. If you are struggling with paying off your bills, thinking of filing for bankruptcy or tired of debt collectors calling; this will be a helpful article for you. I will discuss how credit counsellors can help you manage your debt or monthly finances of your home or company.

There are many consumers who forget or skip making payments for many reasons. I strongly recommend such consumers to use a counselor who will help them fulfill their monthly obligations. When you miss payments, it affects your credit score. When your credit score is low, it means you are a risky debtor. When creditors lend you money, they will offer you a higher interest rate. It makes sense to use a counselor who will guide you with your finances and help you maintain a healthy credit score.

In 2005, the USA government passed the new bankruptcy law and they made it mandatory to go for credit counseling before filing for bankruptcy. This is very important because many consumers do not really understand what bankruptcy means or its implications. If you are thinking of filing for bankruptcy, you have to look for a credit counselor who will educate you on the whole process and all the implications. A counselor will also help you look at other options to pay off your debt like debt settlement, debt consolidation, debt negotiation or other repayment plans available.

When you consult your credit counselor, they will assess your overall financial status. Normally they will look at five essential items given below:

1. Gross monthly income

2. Total debt amount

3. Interest rates on different loan accounts or credit cards

4. Minimum payments for credit cards

5. Other financial obligations like medical expenses, insurance premium, child support and many more

After assessing your financial status, the counselor will prepare a repayment plan for you. The counselor will send the proposed plan to each of your creditors for approval. Once your creditors approve the plan, you will start making payments to the credit counseling agency. The agency then distributes the payment to each of your creditors according to your repayment plan.

The counselors will also recommend other debt repayment programs like debt consolidation, debt settlement or debt negotiation depending with your situation. These programs have advantages and disadvantages. It is very important to take your time to discuss all the options available to you. Many consumers have saved thousands of dollars by making the right decisions.
