Using Debt Counselling to Get the Creditors Off Your Case

Owing money to creditors that you cannot afford can be very hard on you. Constant telephone calls and reminder letters that just don't seem to go away, however, there are options. In some cases creditors will offer re-payment options that you can afford if you are unemployed or your income doesn't cover the costs of your monthly expenses but on the other hand, some creditors may not be as kind and you may need the aided help of debt counselling to stabilise your finances.

The first step is fairly obvious. Contact a credit counselling company but always ensure that you've done your research on the company first to see whether or not they are any good and if they specialise in your area of problems. If for example you are having difficulties paying back a credit card then the credit card company will ensure that you are very serious about it and if you're lucky they will help so that you are paying less a month and a price which you can afford to pay. The credit counsellor will help you manage your money and give you ideas on how you can pay back your debts and not have to live from pay cheque to pay cheque which can be a big problem for anyone. You may also qualify for the credit card debts reduction program so ask about that when you talk to your counsellor.

The second step is that if you have a number of debts with different companies then you should contact the one with the highest debt accumulated and try first with them to see if you can get your monthly charges reduced. Your debt counsellor may even speak on your behalf to see if you can get your monthly charges reduced so it's worth talking to your counsellor about that if you don't feel comfortable doing it on your own. When talking to the credit company they may ask you similar questions to what your debt counsellor has asked and they may ask to see your credit report before approving any payment plans that you can afford.

The third and last step is to ask your credit company what your options are and they will provide you with advice on what steps to take in order to resolve your debts. Be honest with them and if you really do prove to be struggling then they should be able to support you. You may find that instead of the creditor reducing your debt they may just extend the deadline for payment which gives you more time to find the money or give you an alternative payment plan that you can afford. If you're really struggling ask them if it's possible to have any late fees or overdraft fees removed from your account.

So, to conclude! Debt counselling will not only help keep the creditors off your back in return for a payment you can make once a month of bi-weekly but they will also give you educational advice on how you can keep your finances on track to avoid the likes of bankruptcy.
